Victoria, Australia: Brumby gives councils a licence to kill dogs

Fear of “pit bulls” has exploded in Australia in the last few weeks, and even so-called “experts” have jumped on the ban bandwagon. Apparently they haven’t learned anything from the failures of bans in places like the UK and Denver. Victoria already has breed-specific regulations in place for “pit bull” types.

Contact information for people in this article who clearly need some polite education about “pit bulls” and about the serious flaws with the measures they are pushing:

Victoria Premier John Brumby
Introducing legislation allowing “unregistered dangerous dogs” to be killed without appeal. Meaning, if authorities identify your dog as a restricted breed, they can kill it immediately and you have no right to appeal their identification. Recall that recently, in the U.S., a number of dogs identified by authorities as “pit bulls” have subsequently been proven not to be “pit bulls”; these dogs’ owners only got their dogs back because they had the right to appeal the “pit bull” designation. Brumby’s proposal eliminates this right to appeal.

Elgin, IL: Don’t ban pit bulls, residents plead

Please note, this is an opinion piece; however, there is a scarcity of news coming from Elgin regarding the proposed pit bull ban, so I will take what I can get at this point. Rumors are flying, nothing official has been presented, and city councilmembers have not gotten back to me when I request confirmation or denial of rumors (apparently, they aren’t saying much to anyone). At least one councilmember, John Prigge, refuses to listen to facts or information from anyone outside Elgin.

[...] At Wednesday’s Elgin City Council meeting, about 30 people showed up to protest a proposed pit bull ban by the city council. Two councilmen, John Prigge and Bob Gilliam, have openly advocated a pit bull ban.

But many residents said pit bulls aren’t bad dogs, they’re family.[...]

Toledo, OH: Another ‘vicious dog’ case in the courtroom

Yet another story focusing on breed identification and its hazards.  The story at the link has a 2-minute video, including shots of the hearing and a bit of interview with the defendant’s lawyer.

“There’s a history here of the Dog Warden’s office misclassifying dogs as Pit Bulls when they’re not Pit Bulls.  Oftentimes owners don’t have the wherewithal, or they’re scared to fight for their dogs.  They’re often threatened with the threat of criminal prosecution…” — Mr. Smith’s attorney

Another ‘vicious dog’ case in the courtroom

Thursday, October 15, 2009

The eventual focus of this case – just what is a Pit Bull?

Toledo’s Pit Bull or Vicious Dog Law has been the focus of numerous court cases, and another one is now moving through the system. The eventual focus of this case is just what is a Pit Bull?

Three dogs are being held at the warden’s office. The owner claims they’re Cane Corsos, not Pit Bulls. The dog warden disagrees. Today’s hearing was to decide if the dogs have to stay here while the case moves through the court system.
