Worcester, MA: BSL proposed

Edit 7/21: The hearing date for this ordinance has been set for August 10, 6 p.m. in the Esther Howland Chamber at City Hall.

This ordinance is modeled after the Boston “Responsible Pit Bull Ownership” ordinance, whose failures are well documented.

The ordinance is to be referred to the Public Health and Human Services committee, and the members of that committee are Philip Palmieri, Barbara Haller, and Konstantina Lukes. No date has been set as to when this issue might be heard next, but it is important to get your letters out for the council’s consideration.

Proposed rule would restrict pit bulls

Muzzles would be mandatory outside home

WORCESTER — Local pit bull owners are facing the prospects of greater restrictions, duties and licensing requirements for their dogs. City Manager Michael V. O’Brien is recommending to the City Council an ordinance intended to deal with public safety concerns that have been raised by city councilors in recent months about pit bulls.

Lynn muzzle law OK’d

LYNN – The hearing allowed lengthy testimony from those on both sides of the issue. After nearly three hours of debate, councilors voted for an ordinance that requires pit bull owners to muzzle their animals when off their property.

Supervisors order spaying, neutering

NEW BEDFORD —  Martins, the committee’s chairman, cosponsored a June 10 written motion by Councilor-at-large Debora Coelho to consider crafting a rule similar to the “responsible pit bull ownership” ordinance Boston adopted in 2004.

Lincoln, NE: Non-breed-specific dog law proposed

Well over a year since Lincoln first started revising their dangerous dog laws, and BSL was first suggested, the new ordinance will not be breed-specific.

Miami-Dade, FL: Pit bulls skirt law by being used as service dogs

The article is–unfortunately–sensational, biased, and poorly researched (how hard could it be to find and interview a service dog trainer who isn’t disturbingly breed biased?), but it does touch on many issues related to BSL, such as deeply ingrained breed stereotypes.

A growing group of pit bull owners says the animals are ideal service dogs — a designation that exempts them from Miami-Dade’s ban of the breed, which some say is instinctively dangerous.
