Hollister officials are moving forward with an ordinance that would require that “pit bulls” and Chihuahuas be spayed or neutered.
Breed-specific spay/neuter is still breed-specific, and carries all the flaws and ethical dilemmas of any other type of BSL, including difficulty of enforcement, breed identification issues, and so on. Also be aware that mandatory spay/neuter has been shown to increase shelter killing in communities that have implemented it, and is not supported by No-Kill advocates. Low-cost spay/neuter opportunities and enforcement of current leash laws should be the focus in this community, based on the problems they are having.
The City Council meets on the first and third Monday of each month at 6:30 PM. This ordinance will be voted on: Aug. 16.
