An editorial from the Times Leader suggests the pit bull ban will include a grandfather clause. Current “pit bull” owners will have to spay or neuter their pit bulls; may only own two or fewer pit bulls; must register the dogs specially; must take out liability insurance; must muzzle and harness the dogs in public; contain the dog in a special manner. Worcester, MA: BSL vote held until Sept. 7

A not-uncommon strategy for city council, when facing heavy opposition to an ordinance they really want to pass, is to delay the vote until the furor has died down. I wasn’t there, so I’m not suggesting Worcester council is deliberately delaying the vote so they can pass it smoothly later, but I do hope the same opposition will be in attendance at the September 7 meeting.

Pit bull rules on hold

WORCESTER — Residents packed City Hall tonight to give testimony on the City Council’s proposed pit bull dog ordinance. And while the council listened to about an hour of testimony, most of it in opposition to the ordinance, the council never voted on it because Councilor-at-Large Michael J. Germain put a hold on the item in accordance with council rules.

Mayor Joseph C. O’Brien said the council will take the item up at its Sept. 7 meeting.

The council will be taking up the pit bull ordinance tomorrow night — it will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. in the Esther Howland Chamber. The council has given preliminary approval to the ordinance, which would impose more restrictions and licensing requirements for pit bulls.

Bush, IL and Hurst, IL: Whispers of BSL

Neither Bush or Hurst, Illinois are “home rule” cities, which means state law prohibits them from passing BSL. Nevertheless, those in the area need to reach out to the officials in both communities to provide suggestions and good non-breed specific ordinances for their consideration.

WILLIAMSON CO. –  Harvel brought his concerns to the Hurst City Council. While the council appeared in support, some in the community disagreed…. At the Bush Village Hall, the community is also divided. … Both communities expect to have an ordinance drafted by the next meeting, and ready to take a vote.

Blair, NE: Whispers of BSL

The headline is the only suggestion that Blair may consider breed-specific legislation; however, Blair officials could use information and suggestions about strengthening their dangerous dog law without the perils of BSL.

WORCESTER — The City Council has given preliminary approval to an ordinance that will impose more restrictions and licensing requirements for pit bulls. By a unanimous vote, the council last night agreed to advertise the proposed ordinance.
