ADA ruling could alter Denver pit bull ban

The ADA ruling trumps breed-specific ordinances in cities such as Denver and Aurora. Denver first banned pit bulls in 1989 after reported attacks and reinstated the legislation in 2005.

With the ADA ruling in place, City Councilwoman Carla Madison now hopes council could make further exemptions for residents who comply with certain criteria, proving their dogs are well-behaved.

Sheboygan, WI: Council to vote on proposed BSL, Oct 4

An ordinance placing heavy restrictions on any dog displaying the majority of physical traits of a “pit bull”  was unanimously passed Wednesday by the Sheboygan, Wisconsin Common Council’s Public Protection and Safety Committee.
 
The Common Council is expected to vote on the ordinance next Monday, October 4, 2010. 

Please send your POLITE, RESPECTFUL and INFORMATIVE letters in opposition to breed specific legislation to the city officials listed below.  Please also send suggestions and viable alternatives for the council’s consideration.

Dangerous dog restrictions backed

Fences, insurance would be required for breed owners

An ordinance placing heavy restrictions on dangerous dogs in the City of Sheboygan, including confining them to a stockade-style fenced yard when outdoors, forcing their owners to carry $300,000 in liability insurance in case their dog attacks and injures another person, and enforcing strict leash and muzzle requirements, was unanimously passed Wednesday by the Common Council’s Public Protection and Safety Committee.

The ordinance, introduced by Ald. Scott Versey, also would require owners of dangerous dogs to place warning signs on their premises, and ban anyone under the age of 18 from controlling the dog with a leash.

OGDEN — If passed, the ordinance would call for pit bull owners to carry $25,000 in liability insurance coverage, have their dogs licensed and microchipped, and keep the dogs in a secure kennel or fully fenced yard and on an adequate leash when not confined.

Ogden revisits pit bull restriction ordinance proposal

OGDEN, Utah – The city of Ogden is revisiting a proposal regarding pit bull dog ownership restrictions that were scrapped last year after a major public outcry. The proposal is back and was the center of a discussion at a city council meeting Tuesday evening.

Council members said the meeting was all about fact finding. But the city council already has drafted a ordinance outline called the “Dangerous Dog” ordinance, that would place restrictions on the ownership of pit bulls. The restrictions and regulations that some pit bull owners say simply are not fair. The Best Friends Animal Society calls it discrimination.

OGDEN, Utah (ABC 4 News) – The proposed regulations include requiring a $25,000 liability insurance, implanting a microchip ID in the dogs, establishing stricter confinement and leash requirements, and making it a Class B misdemeanor for any violations.

City approves animal ordinance

Mayor Bill Bunten and eight city council members voted 9-0, with Councilman John Alcala being absent because of back problems, to pass a 39-page ordinance amending rules regarding animal control and animal cruelty to enhance public safety, protect animals and save taxpayer dollars.

The ordinance does away with the city’s breed-specific rules requiring owners to obtain special licenses and to implant microchips in any dogs that have the appearance and characteristics of being predominantly of any of three types of pit bull dog.

Tiffin, OH: Council to consider dog law

Although Tiffin’s proposed ordinance does not name specific breeds, Ohio State Law automatically puts all “pit bulls” into the “vicious dog” category. Therefore, any requirements Tiffin institutes for vicious dogs will also automatically apply to “pit bulls.”

The only way to allow Ohio cities and counties to pass truly breed-neutral laws is to pass the bill sitting in state legislature, HB 55, which would drop pit bulls from the vicious dog category.

Council to consider dog law

An ordinance to set laws for dangerous and vicious dogs in Tiffin is to go before City Council at its next meeting.

During a meeting of the Tiffin City Council Law and Community Planning Committee, a draft of the proposed legislation was discussed and agreed upon to move before the board. The legislation lists criteria necessary to label a dog as dangerous or vicious, restrictions upon labeled dogs and states violators are guilty of a first-degree misdemeanor.

PIT BULL DOG WORKSHOP SET FOR SEPT. 29

You are receiving this e-mail because you expressed interest in receiving notice regarding a scheduled public forum to discuss Sterling Heights’ animal control ordinances.

Residents are invited to attend a Pit Bull Workshop Wednesday, Sept. 29 at the Senior Activity Center to provide officials with input in order to possibly strengthen the city’s existing animal control ordinances. The workshop begins at 7 p.m. at the Senior Activity Center, 40200 Utica Road.

During the meeting, city officials will deliver a brief presentation and then open up the workshop to all parties to encourage meaningful, respectful dialogue regarding Sterling Heights’ vicious dog ordinances.

The Ogden City Council will hold a Fact Finding Work Session on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 to discuss a proposed ordinance regulating pit bulls.

The meeting will begin directly after the City Council Meeting which begins at 6:00 p.m. It will be held in the Ogden City Council Chambers, Room 340, at the Ogden Municipal Building on 2549 Washington Boulevard.

This Fact Finding session is designed as a forum for education and discussion regarding the proposed ordinance. Presenters from the Administration and the community will share their varying perspectives and experience on the subject…

Citizens will then have the opportunity to express their ideas and views, with comments being limited to three (3) minutes. Comment cards will also be available and submitted comments will be distributed to members of the City Council.
