Regent, ND reminder: Public hearing about proposed BSL, March 8

Public hearing will be held: March 8, 7 PM, Regent City Hall.

A resident’s petition in Regent previously asked for the city to ban pit bulls and Rottweilers. The city is now considering adding German Shepherds to the list. The whole thing appears to have started due to a family dispute and fear about stereotypes, not because of any actual bites or other incidents in the town.

Grandma targets pit bulls after grandson buys dogs

REGENT, N.D. — A southwest North Dakota woman is trying to ban pit bulls from her small community after finding out her adult grandson purchased three of the dogs. Patty Robbins circulated a petition to ban pit bulls and Rottweilers, gathering 43 signatures in the town of 200 and she turned it into Regent city officials Tuesday.

Fargo committee revises dangerous-dog law

A proposal to revise Fargo’s animal ordinance puts teeth into rules for dangerous dogs that include charging owners with a Class B misdemeanor – a criminal offense – if they fail to properly register or control their animals.

[...] Fargo Lt. Greg Lemke, out of town for training, guided the group rewriting the ordinance. He said the revised law is more enforceable.

“It is less ambiguous … (and) will be much easier to enforce,” Lemke wrote in an e-mail to The Forum.

He’s also glad the law did not single out breeds.

“This was a well-informed group,” Lemke wrote. “Breed-specific laws are not successful; they are difficult to enforce, costly and discriminatory.”[...]
