Pointe Coupee, LA: BSL proposed (10 breeds)

Unclear whether this is a ban or a regulation on ownership of certain breeds. The proposal would affect the following: “German shepherds, Doberman pinschers, Rottweilers, boxers, Akitas, chow chows and any of the four breeds that fall under the pit bull umbrella.” (Not clear which breeds are included in the “pit bull” category; I’m only aware of three breeds traditionally considered “pit bulls.”)

NEW ROADS —

Under the committee’s proposal, German shepherds, Doberman pinschers, Rottweilers, boxers, Akitas, chow chows and any of the four breeds that fall under the pit bull umbrella would be subject to the new ordinance.

[…] That’s when Young stood up and loudly called for a public hearing to set in motion a ban on those breeds.

This is the most ridiculous idea I have ever heard. Why are you targeting innocent animals when you should be targeting the owners? Make it mandatory for owners to complete a basic level of obedience classes so they are taught how to train their dog(s) to behave around everyone. A dog is like a child. If you don’t give that child the basic tools to function within society, chances are they will misbehave. It applies to dogs as well. Teach them how to behave! It’s not rocket science, just common sense!

  2. I would like to know how they chose the breeds because it seems to me that the breeds they chose are suspciously popular breeds the media likes to discriminate against and I see no mention of dog bite/attack statistics in this decision which leads me to believe that this bylaw is ENTIRELY subjective based on the court of public opinion. It is sad that the people making these laws have the power to make laws based on their own uneducated opinions and fears. Pathetic.

  3. I really don’t understand how you people become the law makers and police that uphold the laws with all the unfounded fear you carry with you daily. I had a Chow Chow that was better behaved than I’d guess, most of your children and “no” she never bite anyone, not even as a pup. I have had personal experience with most of the animals you fear and it is the owners you should fear not the dog. The dog must be treated cruelly or taught to be mean. It doesn’t come naturally to any breeds now. The meanness has been breed out of them, unless you allow dog fighting Friday nights? All I had contact with were loving and obedient pets. The poor dogs with the animals for owners are the ones I feel sorry for. Those and the people that are judgemental of other living creatures without grounds for their fear or hate. Give the dogs and their loving families a break.
