Union, MS: Breed ban passed

The town of Union, MS, has passed a ban on “the breed of dog commonly known as a pit bulldog” as well as “pit bulldog mixes,” according to the front page of the Newton County Appeal from Wednesday, September 21. The city may consider banning other breeds in addition to the vague and undefined “pit bulldog.”

Pit bulls have been outlawed in Union.

Meeting in a specially called meeting last Tuesday night, the aldermen voted unanimously to pass an ordinance that would ban “the breed of dog commonly known as the ‘Pit Bulldog.'”

The new measure would also ban what it terms as a “Pit Bulldog Mix.”

The ordinance which would go into effect in October, does not make any provision for the dogs to be penned or leashed. It is specific in calling for their removal from the city limits. [Remainder of article not available online.]

    I have a mix pitty and she is the most,loyal,loving,intelligent,breed. dont punish good owners cause you are also punshing a breed who did not ask to be born they want to be loved,& with love ,training, socialization you have a good dog

    Ridiculous….I am a Veterinary Technician and all the years that I have worked in an animal hospital I have been bitten and have witnessed more agression from Chows, Rotts, and smaller breeds; such as, Chihuahua and Daschunds breed. If the ban continues and Pit Bulls are extinct from city limits-due to popularity of dog fighting-it’s only going to make matters worse and once that breed is singled out–the one’s involved in illegal dog fighting will only find another breed to continue this gruesome act.

    So, does this mean that only dogs that are a mix of pit bulls and bulldogs are banned? LOL Seriously, if they are going to put this BS on the books, they could at least define what they mean.

    totally ignorant.. My Rednose Pit Bull is one of the humblest and most loving dogs I got!!!!! People need to realize most of the problem with a pit are the ones that are fighting them and that’s not the dog’s fault it is the owner’s!!!!!!!! Sickening to know people are so ignorant!!!!!
