Ontario: Bill 16 passes second reading

Ontario Bill 16, which would repeal the province-wide “pit bull” ban, passed its second reading today by a vote of 51 to 26.

The bill was then referred to the Standing Committee on Regulations and Private Bills. Contact the following members and ask them to support Bill 16:
mcoteau.mpp@liberal.ola.org; gcrack.mpp@liberal.ola.org; vdhillon.mpp.co@liberal.ola.org; randy.hillierco@pc.ola.org; rod.jackson@pc.ola.org; msergio.mpp@liberal.ola.org; tabunsp-qp@ndp.on.ca; jvanthof-qp@ndp.on.ca; bill.walker@pc.ola.org

Three MPPs are members of the Standing Committee and voted AGAINST Bill 16: Coteau, Dhillon, Sergio. The other 6 members of the committee supported Bill 16 (and Hillier is a co-sponsor, of course). So, on the surface, it seems like Bill 16 will do well in committee.

The rally before the second reading was also a success. Some photos of the rally: http://www.demotix.com/news/1072153/rally-end-breed-specific-legislation-ontario-toronto

The Canadian Press speaks positively about Bill 16 but is pessimistic about the bill’s future, believing it will die before third reading: http://www.thespec.com/news/ontario/article/675944–bill-to-end-ontario-s-pit-bull-ban-supported-by-members-of-all-parties

What’s the process for private members’ bills in the Ontario Assembly?

Here’s a great flowchart that shows the legislative process for private members’ bills like Bill 16: http://www.ontla.on.ca/bills/general-information/files_pdf/files_en/pmpbill.pdf  Bill 16 has passed second reading and is now headed for “Standing or Select Committee” phase.

So does this mean that me and Chloe, my rescue Pitty, can go to Ontario, Canada now? I always wanted to go to Canada but I wanted my dogs to go with me too.

btw I was using the name Melantha Delano(and Remington) due to some hatemail and rants I was receiving from some anti-Pit Bull people. They have left me alone for a while now and I can now use the name I prefer.

    • No, Ontario’s ban is still in place and will continue to be in effect, unless and until the bill passes the entire process. Bill 16 needs to pass several more readings and votes yet.
