Proposed Maple Ridge bylaw to single out pit bulls

District of Maple Ridge staff are recommending a new dog bylaw that singles out pit bulls as “aggressive” and would charge their owners a licensing fee four times that of other breeds.
The fee would apply to pit bull terriers, Staffordshire bull terriers, American Staffordshire terriers, American pit bull terriers, or a cross of any of the breeds.
Pit bull owners would be required to pay a $200 “aggressive dog” licensing fee annually, and require their dog to be muzzled when off the owner’s property. Pit bulls would also be subject to higher impound fees. […]

Stop BSL 
While I guess it is better than the Ontario BSL of “kill anything that looks like a pit bull”, this needs to stop. Only those that actually are aggressive should be singled out.

Punish the deed not the breed. Have we not learned anything from what just happened in Belfast. I personally know a story of a cockerspaniel that tore off half a kids face. This needs to stop.
I believe this is a form of discrimination I think someone should file a lawsuit. If they do this to pitt bulls they should do it for all dogs.
Exactly, Polly! I want to have another female German Shepherd when I retire and enter her in obedience competitions. Will there be any dogs left by then? I shudder. WHEN are the individual councils/lawmakers going to realise it is the deed not breed??? Nab the bad owners, heavily fine them and fling them into jail with very long sentences. Make them work for society as they serve their sentence on farms, clearing forests and roads of debris, building homes for homeless, etc etc.
A country is judged by how it treats its animals….BSL displays to the world whoever has this law in place is barbaric and lacking knowledge toward pittie “types.” In fact, BSL is nothing short of witch hunts, a kind of quick stab in the dark to solve a bad dog owner problem and the good dog owners are penalised and their dogs eventually seized and killed for how it looks!!!! Disgraceful!
Its been proven time, and time again that BSL DOES NOT WORK! It mostly penalises the good owners and their dogs, for being good! It does nothing for the crux of the problem = BAD DOG OWNERS who do not train and socialise their dogs properly.
WHY dont people make a potential dog owner pass a test before they can own ANY size of dog. If they don’t pass it then no dog for them, AND make that potential owner pay for this high priced test themselves! If people truly want a dog in their life they will pay it, for the joy of having a dog as their companion, to love, nurture and train to fit into society.
To raise the licence fee to MORE than $200 might work, to a point. But the people with dogs that ARE trained for fighting will go deeper underground!
And no, before anyone asks, I do not own a pitbull or any of the “types” regularly mistaken for a pittie. I simply fight for justice, for the good dog owners and especially canine prejudice.
Each city has the power to FIND the dog fighting rings and stop them, NOW, before canine genocide is reached because it will not stop at pitties. There are 75 breeds of dogs on the dangerous dog list in the world, including small dogs.
It sure makes me wonder “where” all this fear of dogs came from. Oh ya, its by seeing the SAME breed muzzled over and over, usuallt a pittie, instilling into the public that pittie “types” truly ARE vicious! Wrong..to do this… it is the OWNER who is vicious! PLEASE GET OFF THE PITTIE’s ARE VICIOUS BANDWAGON !!! Stop killing innocent dogs and STOP muzzling!
World War One was won with the help of pitbull “type” dogs. They were given bravery medals etc. These “types” are tireless at search and rescue, make great therapy dogs, service dogs, etc. The list goes on.

As a lawyer I have to be pleased that Maple Ridge is doing do much to encourage litigation. I don’t doubt that their warrant ess attack on pit bulls will vastly increase their spending on lawyers.
There ain’t a dog that isn’t trainable. its some people who are not trainable. No dog needs to die, it just needs a better home!

I do not have a dog, yet, but I hope to have another one when I retire. Wanted to share this with everyone for and against pitties and their “types.”
Yesterday, as other days, I watched about 10 or more dogs of different breeds and sizes from huge to miniature having a blast, OFF LEASH and UN-muzzled. Such a joy to watch!
Pittie “types” and pedigree American pittbulls were amongst them and although the pittie “types” didn’t know me, as I a complete stranger to dogs and owners, sat there on the grass watching, my face level with the pittie “types” dogs faces, the pittie “types” approached me to say “hello” doggie style, with wagging tails. Well, their whole bodies “wagged” actually..lol…as they brought balls for me to throw or just to sniff me. It was all awesome!
Lets all remember that a “pack” is about 5 or more canines and people together and, including the dogs there was roughly 20 in this “pack.”
Not one dog showed aggression to the other dog breeds or the people AND more to the point, there was no fear in the humans for the pittie “types” as their tiny little dogs chased the pittie “types” and some huge dogs and visa-versa. The little dogs were not yappy either as can be seen by bad dog owners, who often let these tiny dogs run rampant and untrained because they are “small” – which shocks me. Dogs should all be trained properly.
Anyway, I wish the world had the same view as all those dog owners yesterday, who had obviously trained and socialised their dogs with other dogs, and with people, in order for this fun Kindergarten type doggie play to continue for a whole hour! I loved it.
I pray to God that BSL or muzzling is NEVER brought into force here. It would take away this old girls daily joy in my novel writing or editing breaks!
It DEFINITELY IS NOT THE BREED, IT IS THE DEED and ALL BAD DOG OWNER, no matter their dogs size, SHOULD BE PUNISHED, NOT THEIR DOGS. DOGS ARE NOT BORN BAD, people MAKE them bad. Heck, PITTIE “TYPES” AND OTHER BREEDS ON THE DANGEROUS DOGS LISTS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD PROVED IT YESTERDAY, RIGHT THERE IN FRONT OF ME. I however, do not need to learn this myself, I’ve always known it.
ALSO NOTE:
*** I watched the “Dogs in the City” show on TV yesterday. I was appalled to see children ill-treating a large young dog, smacking it in the face with their own toys, jumping on it with their full weight, ramming their dolls pushchair into the dog and chasing it around their home, etc.
The parents JUST smiled. SHOCKING! SHOCKING! No wonder some family dogs eventually turn and bite if parents are not training their kids on how to respectfully treat an animal!!! Hell, I would turn too if I was constantly being tortured like that by anyone. I’m SO glad the dog trainer, his name eludes me right now, showed this family how to behave with one of Gods innocent creatures.
Blessings to all and keep fighting the good fight to end the BSL dangerous laws worldwide and bring in something more educated and informed! It is NEVER the dogs fault, as the latter part of my post above proves.
