Terrebonne Parish, LA: Whispers of BSL

The statistics provided in this article are interesting, as not only were bite statistics provided, but cruelty case statistics were also provided. “Pit bulls” were involved in about a third of bite cases, but were involved in a much larger percentage of cruelty cases.

Nothing has been officially proposed at this time. Please offer polite, reasonable dialogue and breed-neutral alternatives for the parish council’s consideration.

Do pit bulls pose a danger to the public?

[…] After Silver was mauled, Terrebonne Councilman Billy Hebert, said he began considering new ordinances to better protect residents from pit-bull attacks, which could bring the debate over breed-specific legislation to the parish. Proponents of breed-specific legislation say such laws are common-sense ways to approach an obvious problem: Pit bulls are widely-owned, powerful and potentially aggressive dogs that pose public-health and safety concerns in communities across the country.[…]

Hebert said he is still researching the issue. While he said he considers pit bulls a public danger, he said he is open to authoring proposals that go beyond targeting pit bulls.

“Even when people have them on a leash they’re dangerous animals,” he said. “I don’t know about you, but I get nervous when I’m around a pit bull.”[…]

Pointe Coupee Parish, LA: BSL discussed (10 breeds affected)

Pointe Coupee Parish appears to be moving forward with BSL that would affect owners of German Shepherds, Dobermans, Rottweilers, Boxers, Akitas, Chows, and four types of “pit bulls.” They have gone so far as to ask the major city inside the parish (New Roads) to also pass the breed-specific ordinance.

NEW ROADS — […] Under an Animal Control Committee proposal, German shepherds, Doberman pinschers, Rottweilers, boxers, Akitas, chow chows and pit bulls would be subject to the ordinance.

The Police Jury decided to ask New Roads to adopt a similar animal-control ordinance because the proposed parish ordinance would not supersede city, town and village laws.

NEW ROADS — […]

After the discussion, Young offered his motion to ban pit bull ownership, but he was voted down when other police jurors advised him that the parish would have to hold a public hearing before the ban could take effect.

Jurors Joseph “Bozo” Bergeron Sr., Melanie Bueche, Glenn Ray Cline, Cornell Dukes, Kurt Jarreau, Allen Monk, Clifford Nelson, Willie Olinde and John “Sassy” Pourciau voted instead to postpone action on the issue and allow the Animal Control Committee more time to come up with a recommendation.

Jurors Albert “Dewey” Dukes and Young voted against setting the issue aside.
